Sorry, we're going to give you a hard time. Because IWC is launching two new Big Pilot's Watches that cost exactly the same. But are oh so different in terms of looks. So... which one will you choose?
Both Big Pilot's Watches have the same addition after the name: 43 Spitfire, referring of course to the case size and the legendary aircraft to which they are dedicated. Both are also inspired by the functional design of historical mil-spec watches. But.... one model has a titanium case and a black dial; the other has a bronze case and a military green dial. And both again have a titanium back in which the iconic Spitfire aircraft is engraved. Moreover, they both feature a soft-iron inner case to protect against magnetic fields.
Mil-Specs
Over time, IWC Schaffhausen has manufactured numerous field watches for various branches of, among others, the British military. The most famous is undoubtedly the Mark 11, a navigation watch designed for the British Royal Air Force in 1948. But watches were also supplied to the British Army and 'deck' watches to the Royal Navy. These mil-spec service watches were characterised by their accurate movements, extreme robustness, functional design with easy-to-read dials and purpose-built technical features, such as soft iron inner cases to protect against magnetic fields.
Iconic
These new Spitfire Pilot's Watches reflect this chapter in the brand's history. With a distinctive military design, they take their name from the iconic British aircraft of the time, one of the most advanced developments in aviation history.
Titanium
The Big Pilot's Watch 43 Spitfire (Ref. IW329701) has a case, back and crown made of lightweight and robust grade 5 titanium. The dark grey matte colour is the result of a surface treatment in which the components are first polished and then sandblasted. The design of the black dial is inspired by historical observation watches.
Bronze
The Big Pilot's Watch 43 Spitfire (Ref. IW329702) has a bronze case and crown and a titanium back. The bronze used by IWC contains aluminium and iron in addition to copper. Due to this specific composition, the alloy is about 50 per cent harder than standard bronze. Additional features include the material's exceptional biocompatibility and its ability to develop a unique patina over time, giving each timepiece its own character and appearance. The warm colour of the bronze stylishly matches the military green dial and gold-plated hands. Both the hands and the hour markers are coated with a luminous material to facilitate legibility at night.
The price of both watches is €9,550 More info can be found HERE and HERE.
