A year ago, we were already very excited about the televisions Philips TV unveiled at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. This year, we discover that it can all be even more beautiful...A launch at an iconic venue was out of the question in this Covid 19 year. To still provide an appropriate presentation, Philips TV devised the bright opportunity to try out the new OLED+935 Ambilight TV at home, accompanied by a take-away dinner provided by a true star chef. In our case, it was a tasty three-course menu devised by Ron Blauw. With the argument: we want to stimulate all the senses in the most pleasant way possible. Smell and taste were left to the best chefs in the Netherlands; the other senses were pampered by the technology provided. And that turned out to be phenomenal. Because what was good -the cooperation with British audio company Bowers & Wilkins- fortunately remained. But further improvements were sought in all areas, sometimes small, sometimes invisible, but ultimately resulting in an even better television.
SLIMMER
For example, the OLED+935 now features a self-developed Artificial Intelligence functionality, which, by analysing all elements of the picture content, achieves a better balance between colour, contrast, movement and sharpness, creating a much more realistic and natural picture. Of course, it all happens imperceptibly in the background, but the result is something you'll thoroughly enjoy. Especially now that this TV also features four-sided instead of three-sided Ambilight, in our eyes one of the most important trump cards in this brand's TVs. Because once spoilt with that, you never want to be without it. Another nice thing is that the quality of the screen remains optimal thanks to a new and unique anti-burn-in system, specially designed to protect OLED panels.
THREE-DIMENSIONAL
In addition to those razor-sharp images, Bowers & Wilkins provides revolutionary sound performance. Indeed, the OLED+935 is the first Philips TV to feature both dedicated Dolby Atmos Elevation speakers and B&W's unique Tweeter-on-Top mounting. The latter is literal: the tweeter adorns as a shiny ball on top of the wide speaker cabinet that attaches to the base of the television. Because the tweeter is decoupled from the larger drivers and placed outside the cabinet, you get crystal-clear treble without the normal blurring. By cleverly aligning the total of ten drivers, viewers are bathed in a sea of three-dimensional top sound. Optionally, you can connect an extra subwoofer, but the bass delivered is more than enough in our opinion.
QUALITY
And finally: feeling. Because while at first glance that may seem less relevant for a television, there is certainly an experiential added value in that. By using beautiful materials, an ultra-thin chassis, rimless frame and high-quality metal finish as well as 'acoustically transparent' Kvadrat wool blend speaker fabric and solid aluminium on the speaker housing, the TV feels like pure quality. That feeling becomes even richer when you finally sit down, take hold of the remote control with elegantly recessed buttons and backlighting and discover that it is covered in responsibly produced -and also delicious-smelling- leather from Scottish Muirhead. It completes the experience...
