High in the Scottish North lies Benriach Distillery. A distillery known for its wide portfolio of Scotch Single Malts. And special too, because they mature many malts in three different types of casks.
Benriach, located on an old Riach farm in Speyside, Scotland, derives its special characteristics from founder John Duff's spirit of discovery. A whisky adventurer, Duff laid the foundation for the brand's contemporary single malts in 1898. But it took a while for this to come to fruition.
Because after a closure in 1900 and a period under Pernod Ricard, which used the company mainly as a producer of whiskies for in blends like Chivas Regal, the distillery really came to life in 2002, in the form we know it today.
To bloom
Call it a second youth, a kind of Benriach 2.0. Indeed, in 2004 The BenRiach Distillery Company was founded, changing the name on the bottles to The BenRiach (with a big R) and betting on the benefits of flexibility and small-scale production. Single malts produced according to their own philosophy, just as the founder once had in mind. This soon resulted in a rich and surprising portfolio of whiskies.
World of flavours
Hence Benriach (these days, the name is written that way again) as a credo A world of flavour feeds. And rightly so. Experimenting with flavour sat from the outset after all, already woven into the company DNA; it had its origins in founder John Duff's spirit of discovery. Duff, who travelled the world, learned about flavours, discovered the influence of different woods and time. And started experimenting with that.
Special ingredients
Today, we see that reflected in the house's varied whisky offerings, first of all noting that rich ensemble of applied casks. Some single malts are matured in not one or two, but three different casks. And that is special! What also comes into play is the long tradition of distilling three types of whisky: classic unturped, highland-turped and triple-distilled. This, together with that particular use of casks, allows Benriach's whisky makers to explore flavour possibilities of single malt in an unprecedented breadth.
But to top it off, Benriach has another unique asset: the whiskies are blended by Rachel Barrie, one of the few female Master Blenders in the industry and a very experienced flavour expert. Resulting from all these special ingredients are some of the richest, most layered whiskies in Speyside.
For all
The core range thereby consists of two ages (10 and 12 years), both released in smoky and non-smoky variants. Thanks to the casks enriched with notes of sherry, port, bourbon, rum... you name it. A true voyage of discovery for your taste buds, then. With the big advantage: there is always a Benriach that perfectly matches your specific taste preferences...
