Sometimes you stumble upon a match made in heaven. Like when one of your favourite whiskies (Bowmore) joins hands with one of your favourite car brands (Aston Martin)....
Whether it was love at first sight we don't know. It seems likely. And the love baby it spawned is at least a beauty. How could it be otherwise. Inspired by Aston Martin, Bowmore first created the Golden Ratio (or in good Dutch Golden Section)-principle applied to create a new whisky based on pure proportionality. This has resulted in a whisky with exquisite depth and balance. The name that appears on the birth card? Bowmore Masters' Selection.
Golden Ratio
Marek Reichman, Aston Martin's chief creative officer, has often commented on the concept of the Golden Ratio -the mathematical ratio a : b = (a + b) : a which is commonly found in nature and creates aesthetically pleasing compositions - which is at the heart of the design of every Aston Martin. Beauty in optima forma can be created when there is a perfect relationship between every part of the design.
Inspiring
"Every detail of an Aston Martin's design is defined by proportion," says Reichman. "We are constantly striving to achieve the 'Golden Ratio' or optimum proportions. It is this strength that leads an Aston Martin to the creation of absolute beauty. Getting together with Bowmore's Master Blender Ron Welsh to develop a whisky based on this same principle has given me a whole new perspective and has thus been hugely inspiring."
35 years old
This is the first time Bowmore has used the Golden Mean (or in neat Latin Sectio Aurea or Sectio Divina) applied when creating a new whisky. The proportions applied focus on the flavour combinations of character and form; from barrel selection and age to blending. Specifically, the whisky's base consists of a 21-year-old Bowmore, matured in first-fill Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks. The remaining parts of the whisky are composed, in exact proportion to each other, of, among others, an exceptional Bowmore aged for more than 35 years. This is insider knowledge, because you won't read it on the label. On that, only the youngest whisky may always be named.
Complex
This makes Bowmore Masters' Selection a single malt whisky with a powerful, complex, but also sweet finish. At first glance a contrast in flavour, but in reality -naturally- optimally balanced and in proportion. Core values that match Aston Martin. The refinement and complexity manifests itself in an exciting and unprecedented elegant taste sensation.
Perfect balance
"It was a beautiful journey together and a challenge to develop our very first single malt whisky for the Bowmore Master's Selection series, said Ron Welsh, Bowmore Master Blender. "Powerful and elegant; from sweet to spicy; sherry to coffee; honey to pepper - the perfect proportions to achieve absolute depth and balance. Inspired by Marek and his team, we allowed all the elements to give their own unique flavour to it and casks were carefully selected to achieve the desired character. This is the first time we have applied the Golden Ratio when creating a whisky and I am very proud that we were able to bring this unique whisky experience to life."
The limited-edition single malt whisky from the Bowmore Masters' Selection is now on sale for €325 at Gall & Gall and independent liquor stores.
