Sure, you can cycle to the Hema or something every few years to buy a new juicer because the previous one collapsed. But you can also choose to invest a little extra once in a lifetime and buy a really good one, one that, with a bit of luck, you can even pass on to posterity.
And then you inevitably end up with this The Juicer from Espressions. This Dutch company is only concerned with one thing: designing kitchen appliances that are better than anything that already exists. The Juicer, winner of the If Design Award, is their first baby - and we are already curious to see what follows. You can feel that it is good as soon as you unpack it. Solid cast aluminium, a powerful, 1450 rpm induction motor -with a lifetime guarantee, stainless steel sieve and cone and food-safe plastic parts ensure a total weight of no less than 7.4 kg.
Sweeter and creamier
Sleek in a timeless design. But robustness, design and quality materials are one thing, it's also about it functioning better than all its competitors. And in that respect, too, The Juicer does not disappoint. Because every aspect has been thought through. The pressing cone, for instance, has a unique shape that ensures that only the pure juice is squeezed out, while no pressure is exerted on the bitter parts of the fruit, such as the skin and heart. The result is a sweeter juice than you are used to with other presses and you really taste it.
This pressing cone also has two rotation directions, one for fibre-rich and one for clear juice, selectable via the soft-touch buttons with LED lighting on the device. If you choose the high-fibre version, a -also unique- centrifuge kicks in, which not only ensures a higher juice yield (about 30 per cent more that with a regular juicer), but also an almost creamy juice experience, thanks to the extra fibre and the fact that some extra oxygen enters during centrifugation. Also nice: besides all citrus fruits, The Juicer also loves pomegranates. And last but not least: thankfully, cleaning also turns out to be a piece of cake. All washable parts can be removed in two steps and can be put in the dishwasher if desired, although a jet of warm water under the tap will do just as well. Costs € 399 www.thejuicer.eu
