Shoes make the man - or woman - and in the case of Hermans Schoenen, this has been true since 1906. In that year, the Hermans sisters started their own shoe shop on Lange Jansstraat in Utrecht. The reason? With their shoe size 44, it was very difficult to find nice shoes. By now, Hermans Schoenen no longer focuses on men and women, but only on men. However, the company is still known for its high-quality shoes and accessories. In the shop, now located at Oudkerkhof in Utrecht, owner Selwyn A. Moonen offers an authentic shopping experience. That becomes immediately clear when you step into the shop. For us, it was a fantastic experience to step into a completely different shop from what we are used to. The carpet, wooden furniture and other antique accessories - such as an 1850s mirror - give the shop an authentic feel. Also surprising and impressive: The catacombs and a corridor system under the shop...from 1566!
COLLECTION
From English traditionals to hand-dyed Italian shoes and unique Dutch designs, you'll find it all here. The shop features top brands such as Santoni, Crockett & Jones, Tod's, Saint Crispin and Carlos Santos to be found. Customers also often find exclusive highlights. For instance, Hermans Schoenen also sells the type of shoe worn by Daniel Craig in the new James Bond film, which unfortunately won't be released until spring 2021. With its collection, Hermans Schoenen deliberately targets a slightly higher segment, together with a handful of other shoe shops in the Netherlands. Besides shoes, this shop also offers various matching accessories, such as socks, umbrellas and cologne. Thus, the shop offers something for everyone: from students to distinguished gentlemen.
QUALITY
One thing is key: quality. The collections of shoes sold at the Oudkerkhof shop are pleasing to the eye and of the highest quality, often lasting a lifetime. Attention is also paid to maintenance. The shop regularly holds clinics on maintenance and offers products like Saphyr, which allow you to give your shoes the very best attention. Customers get proper explanations on how to polish their shoes. And quality also plays an important role in service. The experienced staff advise each customer in a comprehensive and personal way, so that a visit to the shop is often a real gentleman's experience becomes.
TRENDS
As experts in men's shoes, Hermans Schoenen sees some clear trends returning this season. For example, the colour blue is becoming increasingly popular and we also see brown tones - such as beige and cognac - coming back more often. A nice change from the more traditional black men's shoe. There is also a clear rise in more British designs, characterised by a slightly rounder front of the shoe, in addition to Italian designs that tend to have a more pointed front. In terms of materials, suede is becoming increasingly popular, for its chic yet casual look. And finally, social developments can also be seen in the demand for men's shoes. For instance, Hermans Schoenen sees the demand for trainers continuing to rise; the perfect shoe for a casual working day from home.
